Drove in the Phaeton up the Wnion to Bryn [Caderon]; on our way we left our lunch at Bont Newydd station and fished down to there at 2 o`clock; we had caught about 50 small trout and 1 sewin; we saw a great many good trout but the water and weather was too bright for fishing; we fished till 7 o`clock down to the ford.... the sun was very hot..... Monday August 21st The river was in excellent order for fishing today but the sun was too bright... I got up at 6.30 and tried the pools near the house before breakfast for sea trout but were not successful although we rose 4... to Hengert Ucha to fish down; the fish rose very badly... at lunch which we had by Bont Llyn Rhaeadr we caught a sea trout; the only one we saw all day .... we sent up balloons this evening and lighted up the Torrent walk with magnesium wire .... Trout 7.9 Sea Trout 1 Eels 2

Tuesday August 22nd ....started for Tal y llyn. I walked all the way as they did not catch me up till I was by the lake .... we went out to fish at 11 o`clock; there was hardly any breeze but soon a brisk wind blew from the south west; the trout rose badly till about 4 o`clock, and later on in the evening when the wind dropped a little the fish rose well and we had good sport; we fished up till dark Trout 21 1lbs 2oz These fish were nearly all caught with the Red Ant

Wednesday August 23rd The wind was blowing very strongly the whole day from the south west and it was a good fishing day... began fishing soon after the fish rising a little in the morning and I caught a very fine fish which weighed exactly a pound.... went on fishing again after lunch but the fish rose badly and very short but we managed to catch 5 .. We fished till 9..30 then went in to dinner trout 11 1lb.

Thursday August 24th It was very cloudy this morning when I first got up and its soon began to rain.... breakfasted at 8 o`clock went out in one boat to fish... the wind was very changeable when we began fishing but we managed to catch 6 small trout between us in about half an hour when a regular hurricane with buckets of rain set in and when we had been driven
to the bottom of the lake resort shelter in a farm... After waiting an hour at Towyn we sailed to Aberystwyth doing the greater part of our journey on a truck but we found it cold although fine Trout 6

Tuesday August 29th 1871 .... breakfast at 7.30 and 8 o`clock started up to Llyn Crogennan to fish there, taking our coracle with us. The wind was very high from the south and it was a bright sky. It was too windy to use the coracle for fishing but I got into it and quite unintentionally I was carried right across the lake and arrived safely at the side. The wind throughout the day was very gusty and shifted more to the Eaast; the fish did not rise at all and Lloyd alone caught two small ones trout lake 2

Monday August 5th at 8 o`clock this morning we started to Talyllyn butd it looked a bad morning and the rain came down heavily. I walked up to the Cross Foxes...The rain did not last all day; we began fishing at 10 o`clock and the trout rose well in the morning and by lunch we had 18 fair fish; it was a beautiful day for fishing aa nice breeze from SW and not rain enough to do harm. After lunch we continued having good sport catching most fish at the far end of the lake by the Rushes. In the evening the fish stopped rising so we gave up at 6 o`clock. We had a very wet drive home and were thoroughly drenched when we got in. Trout (Talyllyn) 41 17 [and 3/4] pounds.

Tuesday August 6th As the river was in very good order we determined to fish it; the Minor fishing about the house while I walked up to the mill above Bont Issa and began there. Thursday August 9th or 8th A fine day. We breakfasted as usual at 7.30 and the Minor started to fish the river while I walked up to Llyn Cynwych. As the lake was calm I began fishing for perch and was soon in a shoal and caught one, but I had to give it up as I could not keep the boat in the same place not having a rope. I searched hard all day, both for trout and perch. I rose four trout and in the evening lost a couple of perch. Friday august 9th .... at 7 o`clock this morning we hardly could make up our minds to go to Talyllyn as it was such a bright morning; however we started about 8 o`clock and I walked all the way there reaching Tyn y Cornel at 945. Before lunch I fished in a boat by myself while the Minor and Wynne fished in another. Throughout the day the wind was very shifty and the weather was too bright to expect to do much. Saturday August 10th It was very wet this evening with a strong southerly wind and it was a dull day. The Minor and I both fished the river as it soon came down a heavy flood. I walked up to the Big Pool but did little there only getting 1 Sea Trout with worm. I walked round Bontnewydd Bridge and had little sport till I met the Minor in a Salmon which Wynne had hooked with a worm in the Ford Pool and the Minor had played him on the small trout rod nearly 100 yards down the river until he was hung up in the bushes. The fish was still evidently on but it was a fearful place to land him and we saw it was quite an impossibility to do so..... in the evening when the river was sufficiently clear we put on flies and about 7 o`clock I killed 2 sea trout, one about 1lb in the Ford Pool: we also rose several others.... Trout 87. Sea trout 10 = 97. Total number of trout killed during the week. At Talyllyn 57. Llyn Cynwych [sic] Perch 1. Wnion river; trout 381, Sea trout 10 Grand total 368 Trout 1 Perch

Wednesday August 14th A very bright and hot day. The Minor and i decided to try the Perch at Llyn Cynwych so we started up there and had a dingy on the lake. We fished with minnow but I fancy our bait was too large. The Perch to our great surprise bit shockingly badly and we several times tried the trout with no better success. I myself had very bad luck loosing [sic] some nice perch and although I stayed up there till 8.30 i did not catch a single fish all day. There was a very nice fishing breeze on the Lake the greater part of the day: we rose some very good fish when we began in the morning and those we did get were a nice size, 3 weighing 2 lbs. Saturday August 17th A very fine and hot day. This morning I walked into Dolgelley and met the Minor about 10 o`clock at Llyn Cynwych walking up there. There was a nice breeze on the lake but we did no good all day. It was wonderful to see the amount of Red Ants at the water towards evening: the trout rose fairly at them but would not look at our Flies. We bathed in the evening before we went down and it was very jolly..... Perch 1

Wednesday August 21st The Minor and I started for Talyllyn soon after 7 o`clock. It was a beautiful morning, rather too bright for fishing, but there was a nice Southerly breeze. We both fished in the same boat and had bad luck before lunch. The Minor "breaking" in two fish and losing several others; I also was unlucky but then the fish rose shyly, owing to the brightness of the water. Thursday August 22nd We had breakfast at 5.30 and drove to Abergwynant Bridge where the otter hounds awaited us. Colonel Pryce threw off at the Bridge and immediately the hounds got on the drag of an otter which they hunted up stream: the scent was very good and it was not long before the otter was viewed by "Dick" but to our great disappointment she gained a large stronghold of rocks from which it seemed quite impossible to bolt her although the terriers were marking her not far off. We then drew the stream farther up without success and also had a long walk to Llyn Crogennan where we found old traces of an otter. We walked back to the rocks and immediately a lot of men began working with crowbars, sledge-hammers etc to move the rocks: I ran down to to Abergwynant to fetch fresh hounds but I am sorry to say the otter shifted to a place where it was impossible to get her out, so we had lunch which Mamma brought up and gave the otter up. We drove back to Dolserau about 3 o`clock and the Minor and I went out on the river till 6 o`clock and caught Trout 41

Saturday August 24th A very close day and fine. We hardly knew where to fish today but we decided to stick to the river, the Minor fishing for small trout about Dolserau while I walked up to the Big Pool and there caught a very nice Sewin (9 oz.) with worm. I then went on to the Lugog Pools and saw some splendid fish in the deep pools and a Salmon which bit my worm twice, but of course the fish was very shy, and I only got two trout 1/4lb and 7oz. besides small ones. I walked back to meet the Minor..... met him on the river when I went to pay after 6 o`clock at the Ford. He had caught a great number of small ones - with Wynne, also a large Eel. Monday August 26th As it was raining hard this morning the Minor and I expected a flood down the river so we accordingly walked up to the Big Pool and fished it without success and as the weather cleared up we walked home and took Jack and the Phaeton to Pont Issa and when we got there, a beautiful water was coming down. I fished the Pool under the Bridge with worm and got a Sewin and 8 fine Trout and the rest of the afternoon we fished down with fly for Sea Trout: if we had had luck we should have made good bag but I lost 2 Sea trout and the Minor 3. We fished some way below Bont Newydd till 7 o`clock and caught Sea trout 3 Trout 50 some of which were nearly 1/2lb.

Wednesday August 28th I got up at 7 o`clock and rowed out in a boat and had a bath in the lake: it was dead calm. We breakfasted at 8 o`clock and we went out fishing soon after as a nice breeze sprang up which blew moderately till 12 o`clock; afterwards it was much too strong and squally for fishing. By lunchtime 2 o`clock I had caught 5 nice trout; the Minor 3; we then determined to go home as it was a very little use fishing in such a strong wind. I walked home from the bottom of the pass and we were home just in time 6 o`clock to dress and go with our People to the Richards (Carnguwch) dance.... Trout 9

Saturday August 31st We had breakfast at 7 o`clock and went out on the river as it was in capital order for a fly: we fished the Ford and Handbridge Pools first, and at the latter I rose a sea trout: we then drove up to Bontnewydd and fished down: but our sport was back as the Sea trout rose very shyly and were not easily hooked. We had to be in soon after 3; as we went away by the 5.10 train to stay with Colonel Pryce at Peithyll for some partridge shooting.... we did not reach Peithyll till 9 o`clock as the engine broke down at Borth. It was a fine day.

The river was in good order, perhaps a little too dark: however. the fish rose badly: and I only caught two sea trout, losing one nice fish: while Kensie did the same. The river seemed full of fish: as we saw them jumping. We fished some way below Tyn-y-groes and gave up about 6.15. at the Turn[?] we met Griffiths who had fished up with another ?oc? from Llanelltyd: they had seven sea trout. we got home rather late at 8 o`clock. At 9 o`clock Kensie and I started up to Coedmaeowglog...did not find hide...had a long walk. beating the whole ground, and only found four old birds. awfully wild but by studiously following them up I knocked one of them over : we flushed two snipe and I bagged them. I gave up at 3 o`clock : and went home, and fished for sea trout on the Wnion : the river being in fair order : and I used small flies. I rose several fish but only caught one. The Squire joined me and just before seven o`clock we tried the ferret at the rats in the old Farm. but they would not bolt : so we soon gave it up. WE played Billiards after dinner. Grouse -1. A tremendously squally day, the wind blowing sometimes almost a hurricane : soon after ...started to Llanelltyd Bridge in the phaeton : the rain came down in torrents and continued most of the morning....we fished up the Mawddach: I previously had a cast in the Wnion: and caught a small sea trout. the wind was so furious I hardly could get my line on the water,,,and by lunch time at one oclock I had not stirred a few...a piece of luck: the weather cleared, and i rose a salmon in a deep pool: he missed the fly: but turned and took the top dropper: after 20 minutes play I landed a fine fresh-new Salmon - 6 3/4lbs: he was caught on a Fly with blue body and silver twisel: with Woodcock wing...walked home across by Nannau and Llanfaoreth [Llanfachreth] starting soon after 5 o`clock. A wet and cloudy day....drove to Llanelltyd: and fished up the river...sadly disappointed..we gave up..got back about 4.45: rather wet...Went out for an hour or two on the Wnion: but without doing any good. we were much bothered on the Mawddach by people fishing with the ????ow [minnow?] in front of us: and that was partly why I gave up fishing. We started over to Talyllyn about 8 o`clock: and not long after we started the rain came down in torrents. I walked most of the way there as the wind was very cold. The lake did not look promising: as there was a heavy wind blowing...it was hard fishing...I kept on until 5 o`clock, the wind never abating: but the rain stopped. I took the luck to catch two trout at once: and... I caught
a trout, 1 lb 5oz - near the Rushes. We got home at 7 o`clock...Trout (Talyllyn - 24 -(1) 1 lb 5oz.

...drove right up the Wnion above Hencwrt Ucha. to fish down as the river as in good order. The weather was showery but warm...only met 5 sea trout on of which I hooked: the trout we caught were very small: but I caught one 1/4 lb up a small stream running into the Wnion. We got home about 7 o`clock. Trout (Wnion) 32. ...went to a dance at the Reveley`s after dinner.

I did not go out fishing until 11 o`clock...to Dolgun..The river was in high flood but it was a good colour for fly. I fished up the river trying both the fly and minnow but I only had two rises with the latter. Davies called us at 5 o`clock this morning and we started a little before six to Llyn Llymy...We reached the Lake about 7.50: after a steep walk. The wind was S.E: and fairly strong and there was a nice breeze on the Lake: but the trout rose badly and what we caught were very small: the Minor before lunch caught 17 and I - 4:..lunched at 12 o`clock and the walked down the hill to the Gwywllych: and fished it down as far as we could. The river was in good order but we did not catch the fish, so fast as we wished and when we stopped fishing about 5 o`clock we made our basket up to 72. The Minor and I tried the Wnion for a short time but we did nothing except the Minor hooked a Sevin off the bridge, and lost it. Dinner was at 8 o`clock. Trout (Llyn Llymy and Gwynllwyd). 74

We began fishing about 10.30 : the wind being very changeable on the Lake : and we hardly expected to catch anything : and when we lunched at 12.30 we only had four fish..in the afternoon we fished the top of the Lake: and picked up odd fish ...fortunate in not losing many, We got very wet in the afternoon: and the wind sometimes was ..very strong..we did not get any over 3/4 lb...got in about 7.15. We ordered our dinner at 9`o`clock and went out fishing on the Wnion till then, each fishing a different part of the river : which was very high, but clear...fished until it was dark but the fish took very badly...Trout 33 - Sea trout 1

Monday August 2nd A fine and hot day. Hamilton went away today. I started off alone to fish the Cader Lakes and after a stiff walk, I reached Llyn Arran at 10 o`clock and as there was a great rise of the trout I had capital sport, although the sun came out rather too bright towards the middle of the day. About 1 o`clock I walked over to Llyn y Cader [sic] but could do little there, as another man was fishing it: so i returned to Llyn Arran, and caught a few more trout before starting away at 5 o`clock. Wednesday August 4 I got up at 7 o`clock and fished before breakfast, but only caught two trout, and I left my boat at the head of the lake, and walked up to it after breakfast at 9 o`clock. The breeze kept up well all day till about 3.30: and I took advantage of it and fished hard till then when I had lunch. I caught one good trout (18oz) by the rushes which gave me great sport. I killed with the same flies as yesterday, and heavy showers fell during the day. I did not good [sic] after lunch and gave up about 4.30 and started homewards on foot luckily picking a bag up at Minffordd to help me home with my fish, which was no light load. I got in about 7.15, and after dinner the Minor and I started back to Talyllyn in a car; which the Minor had met in Dolgelley: and which came from Tyn y cornell. Thursday August 5th The Minor and I were out about 7.30: as there was next to no breeze we only caught two trout. We left our boat at the head of the Lake and walked back to breakfast at 9 o`clock: and then set to work again. Unfortunately th thee breeze blew the wrong way for the big fish, viz. down the Lake: and the trout hardly rose at all, and we had to work hard to get our basket...... It looks very like rain towards the end of the day. We had a bath just before dinner at 6 o`clock: and fish afterwards till it was quite dark, but only caught trout, although I hooked two or three others. Trout Talyllyn (Trout) 22 killed with various flies.

Friday August 6th It looked very like a wet day this morning, but it cleared off: and the wind went round to the east and was very strong. We went out for breakfast and killed one trout. The wind blew much too strong for successful fishing, and the Lake was very rough. We found the fish rising best at the bottom of the Lake, but they were of no size: the Minor alone getting hold of a good fish in the Burn Bay, but he [gutred] off; breaking his fly in the rope which attached to the stone [?]. Saturday August 7th I went into Dolgelley this morning to attend petty sessions; but as there was little business, I got home by 12 o`clock. I had been out for an hour or so with a gun after the rabbits, and killed two. After lunch I started up to Llyn Cynwych [sic]: the weather was close and dull, and there was hardly any breeze: consequently although the trout will rising very freely, I could only rise two which I caught, and I also caught another good trout fishing for Perch with minnow: the latter would not bite at all. Monday August 9th Heavy rain fell this morning, so the Minor and I got up to fish: but the river did not rise very quickly, and as the rain stopped we did no fishing before breakfast. Afterwards we went by rail to Drws-y-nant to fish down, and the river was much discolored, but had not risen more than a foot or so. We had a very heavy thunderstorm in the middle of the day, but not much rain: however, the Sewin would not rise at all, so I gave up about 2 o`clock and had a walk to Llyn Cynwych, and got there about 4: but as the rain came on I went down to the Wnion again, and tried the Ford Pool and Crooked Pool without success. Tuesday August 10th We had very heavy rain today and the Wnion came down in heavy flood. We did not go over to the Mawddach, but fished the Wnion with worm, going up above Bontnewydd, and also as far as the Mill Pool towards Dolgellau, but owing to the high flood, we could do little good, and the Ford Pool was the only place where we met fish, killing two Sewin, and losing two others, but they were small. The rain stopped about 2 o`clock, and the river was gradually clearing for fly, when we had to give up, and the Minor hooked a nice fish at the tail end of Llyn Goch [sic] Sea trout (Wnion) 2

Wednesday August 11th The Minor and I started to Dolgelley at 6 o`clock, and took a car to Tyn y groes. After some breakfast we fished up, and the river was in good order for Fly, but the day was quite spoilt by the sun. I caught a nice Sewin just below the [round?] wooden bridge on the Mawddach, and the Minor had three smaller ones. We went right up to the Falls, and I left the Minor about 3 o`clock and walked home, as I wanted to meet Arkwright who was coming to shoot with us. Squire came with me to Bontnewydd but the train did not stop, and we had to go all the way to the Dolgelley, and met Arkwright there. The weather looked unsatisfactory for shooting tomorrow. Monday August 16th The river was in fair order for small flies, so the Minor and I went out fishing, but about 11 o`clock so bright did the sun get that we gave up immediately: I having risen 3 Sewin and caught one. We started about 11.30 to shoot at Penantigi and Maesygamdda, and then set to work, and as there was a good scent we soon found our birds. The first covey of four we got, but were unlucky with another 7 or 8 birds: the Minor alone shooting at them, killing one and [.... ?]. We then went on to Maesygamdda, and found some birds there, shooting 1 [1/2] brace: but the birds were rather wild. We then trudged home, pretty well content without our days sport: and calling at Caerynwch, left two brace of birds there. Grandmamma arrived today. Tuesday August 17th A wet day. I went down to the crooked pool and fishing with small flies, hooked a 3lb sewin on a red spinner, and after an exciting tussle of 20 minutes the Minor landed him for me. We then fished up with fly, and I caught a smaller one:- and by the time we reached the Helygog pools the river came down and we separated, and fished with worm, and met again at the Ford Pool; had the Minor some more hooks he would have done better, but he was broken by a big fish. We took to fly again towards evening, but the river was rather too high, but I caught a nice fish of 2lb on the [Popham]. Sea Trout (Wnion) 8 (1) 3 lbs (2) 2 lbs Trout about 50 and two eels.

Saturday August 18th The Minor and I got up about 5 o`clock, and walked into Dolgelley and took a car to Tyn y groes: John Davies coming with us. After we had had some breakfast, we started out to fish, and found the river in good order, but of a very dark colour. Unfortunately our chance of sport was ruined by a glaring hot sun nearly all day, and although we fished a long way up the Mawddach the Minor alone got a small Sewin. Friday August 20th The Minor went up to Chester today to be medically examined: I had intended to fish the river today but the weather was so bright I gave up the idea, and after the Coach had started to Coedmaeswglog, and met John Davies with Don there [sic]. Charlie Owen, whom I met at Bont Rhidyr [Rhaeadr] gave me leave to go over Gethli [sic Gelli] Farm, and here i found most of the birds I saw, but they were very wild and did not shoot up to form. We came across a covey of at least 12 birds after lunch on Gethli, but I could only get a long shot at them, and we never found them again. I gave up shooting soon after 2 o`clock, walked home, and paid at the Big Pool on my way. I went out to try for a Sewin when the sun went down; I rose two in the Ford Pool, and two in the Pool in the hollow, one of which i killed. The Minor returned from Chester at 10 o`clock. We woke up early this morning to find the Wnion in one of the highest floods known for years. The river was over the bridge, and through the plantation. Wynne and I went before breakfast and tried with worm, but really there was no place to fish, and Wynne alone caught a small sewin. After breakfast at 8.30 we started over to the Mawddach ... and went up to Gethigemlyn , and worm fished. I caught three good fish in this pool, and one other with worm; and in the afternoon we went off to the Eden, and found it just in order for fly The sewin, however, rose very badly, and Wynne caught a small one. The latter left me at the junction and I crossed at the wooden bridge, and tried some of the best pools the other side - on the Mawddach. I hooked one fish. The first thing I did was to hook a sewin, but the fish broke my very light tackle in some sticks. I was equally unfortunate with two other sewin, one being a very good fish, but I managed to catch a small sewin, and 51 trout, and I left off fishing at the bridge. A fine and bright day. ... went by 8.50 train to Arthog .. walked up to Crogennau: and fished. but it was not much use the day being bright-and I think too late in the season I went up to Llyn Curry [Cyri] in the afternoon, but found it too bright, and there was next to no breeze, I pulled some small trout out of the small stream on the way up. We fished up to Bontmewydd, and then took the train up to Drws-y-nant, and the river came down in heavy flood. Unfortunately I broke my rod, and I had to walk all the way back to Dolserau to get another, and I fished the pool near home with fly, but had no sport, the weather looking very unsettled.
The sport was as follows (Wnion) Sea trout 4. Trout 40. Kinsey shot Grouse 3. Snipe 11 Caerynwch.

We were going to have a picnic at Talyllyn, but the weather looked so threatening… I walked right up to the stone bridge over the Eden and fished up a long way with small flies. I caught a good many trout, and as the river became gradually discoloured I put larger flies and fished the best of the lower pools. The river was in excellent order, but the fish took badly, and I lost several sewin. I fished right up to the Falls, but rose nothing till I came to the pool where I caught the grisle the other day: here I rose a fine Salmon to the Black and Yellow: and eventually hooked him on a double hooked Durham Ranger he gave me half an hours exciting sport, and John Davies landed him beautifully. Went on to Tyn y Groes owing to continual rain, the river was very high, but a splendid colour for fly. We tried up the Eden first but found it too high, and so we went off to the falls. At the first long pool Wynne caught six lb Sewin and at 1:30 I hooked a Salmon of quite 15lbs in the mine Pool, having risen him first to a Durham Ranger. I was all alone for the first half hour, and then Wynne joined me: and we had great hopes of killing the fish: but after an hours exciting play he got off in a very rough place. We tried the Eden again, and I caught another 2lb’er at the bridge pool. We then returned to Tyn-y-Groes had some tea, and tried some of the lower pools, but Wynne also rose a fish. WE and CME Sea Trout (Eden) 2 (1) 2 ¼ lbs (1) 2 lbs Sea Trout (Mawddach) (1) 6 lbs.

We did not go to the Mawddach, as there was too much rain… I began at the Ford and fished right up to the Bont Rhidge: I caught three Sewin with worm, and took to a fly in the afternoon, and caught a splendid Sewin at the tail end of Llyn Goch with the Durham Ranger. Wynne and I started over to Tyn y Groes in a perfect downpour of rain, and we found the river very high. We went to the Eden, and in the first pool I fished. I rose a Salmon three times. Wynne at the same time lost a fine fish and rose another, and at the tail end of the [?] pool I rose a fish twice, but he did not touch my fly. This was a bad beginning: and we then went up the falls, but the river was much too high for fly and we tried a worm: and then returned to the Eden in the evening, but even then it was too high. Heavy rain fell all day and there was a grand chance of catching fish… I went to the Mawddach… I [?] in a grand fish in the ‘minors pool’. He rose twice to Durham Ranger, at the tail of the pool: without stopping a moment he went straight down stream, and had I and John Davies not crossed the stream, we should have never caught him. He weighed 11 lbs… I walked home in a tremendous downpour. C.M.E Mawddach. Salmon 1 11lbs Durham Ranger. C.M.E went out on the wnion in the morning and killed Sea Trout 1.

Very heavy showers falling. We found the river in yellow flood… I commenced at Gettigemlyn (sic: Gelligemlyn) with worm, but owing to the high wind, could do nothing. I caught three nice sewing in some holes just above, one being more than 3lbs. I then walked up to the ‘Meeting of the Waters’ and fished steadily up with worm, and had great sport. I tried some of the upper pools with fly in the evening, but the river was too high and discoloured. The others were blank, but Wynne rose a grisle in the Eden three times. During these five days August 26 27th 28th 29th 30th which I spent at Kirklington hall, the weather was most stormy and wet, quite spoiling all my chance of fishing. The river the Lyne all Line, runs into the Solway Firth, and I should consider a good trout stream. Whiting (Sea trout) also run-up, also an occasional Salmon. The water during my visit was the colour of yellow and red clay. I made an attempt to fish for a few hours (with fly) on Wednesday afternoon (27th) and caught 5 trout: some a quarter of a pound: but it was very odd that I should have caught any in such thick water. The sun was intensely hot and bright all day, so the others went home after lunch. I wanted to see Colonel Romer so I waited, and fished my way down to Tyn y groes, and walked home. Tuesday 5 August A terribly wet day, and stormy: I was out this morning by 7 o`clock, and went to the Ford, finding the river in worm order, but it was falling very fast. I caught one Sewin of 2lbs: and although I tried some other pools, Dolgun, Crooked pool, meeting of the Waters I did not get another. After breakfast Wynne and Ned went over to the Mawddach, while Stokes accompanied me on the Wnion: the river rose steadily later in the day, but was never a good colour for worm, and the fish took very badly. Fished the best pools up to the viaduct, and then ended at Dolgun. Only caught one other 2 1/2 pounds at the Ford. Wynne and Ned had a good day at Getligemlyn [sic] and other pools. Wednesday 6 August 1879 Dancing last night necessitated a later start...... went on to the Mawddach putting the trap up at Gethigemlyn [sic] farm. River in worm order and very high: and frequent heavy showers during the day kept it up high. I caught a good sewin (4 1/4lbs) at Gethigemlyn, but did not do anything more till I got to the Meeting of the Waters where I got two small ones, and one also just above. I then went up above the wooden bridge to try fly, but it was rather too discoloured. Walking back to Gethigemlyn, found the river just getting clear for fly. At the tail of the pool I hooked a Salmon on double hooked Durham Ranger, a very heavy fish. Caught my second best sewin there, and rose several smaller. I did not get home till 8.30. Wynne only caught one sewin on Wnion.

Saturday 16th August 1879 Kinsey and I started about nine from Dinas taking the trap to the bottom of the bigin, and sending Evan Jones home with it. Walked up to the top of the bigin, and expected a fine day, but rain came on from East, but fortunately for us it stopped about 1 o`clock. We found a fine covey of birds, out of which I killed two, and Kinsey one, and we picked up a single bird afterwards. Descending to Coedmaeswglog and Gelli, we beat all the ground carefully, but only saw five or six birds. I had three shots, killing two birds and a wood pigeon. We went down to Pont Rhiadr, where I found the Squire waiting for is in the dog cart, and he took his home. Wynne fished Wnion and caught 80 trout and one Sewin. I began at the crooked pool, and fished right up to Bont Llyn Rhaidyr [sic], but my sport was poor as I only rose one sewin, but I spotted several nice fish notably one in Dolgarnedd wood which I saw rise, but I could not get him to look at my flies, and I eventually scared? him by flinging worms in front of his nose. Wednesday 4 August I walked up To Llyn Cynwch this morning, it was a cloudy and misty day with a variable wind: not at all a day I should go up perch fishing. As there was a nice breeze I began with fly, and caught a very nice trout of half a pound, and rose two or three more. I then commenced perch fishing, and had not much difficulty in getting minnows for bait. The perch bit remarkably well between 4 and 6, and I missed a good many. After six a sudden mist came on which materially affected my sport. I stayed tho` at the Lake till 7.30. A fine evening

Thursday, August 5 1880 A warm day with a misty rain all the afternoon and evening. I started out this morning up the Wnion and began fishing at Dolgun and fished steadily up. I rose one sewin in the Ford and caught a small one above Bont Newydd. I went up as far as Bont Rhiadyr [sic], but the trout rose badly, and the heavy rain drove me home rather early. I dined this evening at Caerynwch.

Friday 6 August 1880 Richie came down from Caerynwch this morning at 8:45, and drove over with me to Tyn y groes. I began fishing at Gethi Gemlyn [sic. Gelli Gemlyn] and the river was in fair fly order, but rather thick, and the sudden rise about midday spoilt the fishing, and about 1.30 a steady downpour of rain came on and continued nearly all day. Richie left me at the Meeting of the Waters, and I went up to the Falls with Hugh Jones, but as soon as we got up to the top pool, a heavy flood came down. I eventually returned to the Meeting of the Waters and fished up with worm. I caught two sewin.
Mawddach. Sewin 3 (1) 1 1/2 pounds I got a good many trout with a worm. Number not kept.

Monday, 9 August [1880] I drove over to Tyn y groes and went to Eden first, but the river was low: and as the sun came out very strongly during the day, it was very little good fishing. I tried up to Larch tree pool, and then went to the Mawddach and tried up to the Falls, but to no purpose, so I returned to the Meeting of the Waters and waited quietly till the sun went off the water. As soon as I began I hooked and lost a good sewin in the rocks below the Meeting of the Waters, and go [sic] after to Gethi gemlyn [sic Gelli gemlyn]. I rose two or three very good fish and caught one. I fished below to Dolgloeuw [sic] where the trap met me, and I drove home late, not getting in till nearly tea.

Tuesday, 10 August [1880] Went out on the Wnion with small flies early this morning and fished from Dolserau Issa [sic] to Dolgun. I caught one sewin at the Pool in the Hollow and lost one in the pool below. This morning at 10.30 I rode down and attended a Petty Sessions. Came back to lunch, and afterwards went up to Llyn Cynwch to try for Perch but I did not stay long as I was anxious to meet Heatley Noble who came from Park Place to shoot with me. He arrived alright by the 6 o`clock train. Weather very fine and warm.

Friday 27th August I started to Talyllyn soon after 8, got there by 10. It was a beautiful day, but of course too bright for fishing. However by dint of hard fishing I made a very respectable bag. The wind shifty at first blew steadily the rest of the day, and by means of the Red Ant I killed 21 trout fishing till 5.30. Few trout were rising and they rose very shyly to the fly. I left Tyn y cornel [sig Tyn y gornel] at 6 and reached home soon after 8: and was very pleased with my day.

Friday, August 5 It was a fine morning, and sunny, but the wind was very strong from S. I did not go to the Mawddach, but walked up Llyn Arran [sic], intending to fish the Cader Lakes, as it apparently was going to be a bright day. But some ominous clouds appeared gradually, and so after lunch I did not stay, but came down to the river, which I tried without success. I think I caught six trout in Llyn Arran, of course, small. Lorna and Hide came with me for my walk.

Sunday, August 7 A threatening looking morning....
Monday, August 8 Rain fell heavily during the night: and I got up about six o`clock and went out for an hour on the Wnion, and with fly caught two small sewin at the Ford Pool. I rose one at the crooked pool and one at the pool in the hollow, in to breakfast at 8 o`clock, and then Davies and I started over to Mawddach driving up to Pen y Bont and Davies took the trap back to Dolmelynllyn. At Cornelius` pool I caught a nice sewin of 1 3/4 pounds: and then went up Eden; I did not meet a good fish till I got up to [Craigwryn], halfway down which pool I saw a boil at my fly, which was no doubt a big fish. I rose him to thunder and lightning, and then tried him with Durham Ranger, but he would not come again, so I had lunch it now being 1 o`clock and I cast over the fish afterwards, but he would not move. I continued fishing to the end of the pool, and at the very end just as I was making my last cast, I stuck in a good fish, which gave me a bit of running about, as he did his best to leave the pool, but I coaxed him up and just as I got him in a good position, the fish came away, and I lost him – a fish about 9lbs. I caught three sewin in Eden, one of 2lbs – and then about 4.30 I crossed to Mawddach, and tried steadily up from Tyddyn y Gladys, but could not meet a fish, so I went up to the top pools and as the river was pretty high, I put on a good size double hooked "Jock Scots"
which had the desired effect, as in the Minor`s pool, I stuck in a good fish, which I landed after a short tussle: he was very long and much below weight, having been in trouble before, apparently last year as there was a hole where the hook had been in the upper jaw. I tried the top pool and at the tail end of it hooked a fine salmon which rushed up to the head of the pool, made one plunge and was off. I had a long walk back, and we did not get home till 8.45 .

Tuesday, August 9 [1881]. I got up before six, and went out on the Wnion, and it was in capital order for fly. I went up to the big pool, but did not hook a fish until I came to the pool opposite Pugh`s farm, here I lost a good sewin. I fished down to the pool in the hollow, at the tail end of which I hooked a fine fish, which after some trouble I landed; it was exactly 3 pounds. I went to the Petty Sessions this morning and did not get away till 1.30: but I had my fishing things ready and Richie met me on the in the Tunn, and he I Davies went over in the car. We had our lunch on the way to save time, and we drove up to Pen y Bont as I went to the upper part of the river, as the lower part was being well fished, I commenced at Eden bridge pool and caught a small sewin here, and at Cornelius` got to sewin and rose a grilse twice and hooked him, and he gave me good sport, and I gaffed him myself: he was fresh-run, and a very pretty fish. I tried up to the Falls but did not rise of fish of any sort . We were home late.

Wednesday, August 10, [1881]. Still more rain. I rose early, and went out on Wnion before breakfast but only caught a small sewin. Richie came down at 11, as I was anxious to give him a lesson with the gun, and we took a walk after rabbits, but such pouring rain came on we found none out. After lunch went out on Wnion and fished up to Bont Newydd: the river had risen an inch or so, I caught two sewin – one at the top of Llyn Goch [sic] with worm: a nice fish, the other – small with fly.

Wednesday, August 24 I went home today by the 12.10 train. After lunch went to the Wnion with Fred Robinson; the river was in good order for small flies. Robinson fished down from the crooked pool, while I fished up from the Ford Pool, and I went up to the Helygog pools where I rose two sewin caught one: I also caught a sewin at the Rock opposite Pugh`s Farm. Robinson did nothing. I had several brown trout which I did not count. I lost one sewin at the Ford and one in the Helygog pools but none were large fish.

Thursday, August 25 It rained heavily from about six o`clock, and continued without intermission all day with heavy squalls from The SW: and it was one of the roughest days I ever remember. Fred Robinson and I started over to Tyn-y-groes about 9 o`clock, and as the river had not come down I went up towards the falls, but when I reached Pen y Bont the Eden was in flood, so I walked up to the wooden bridge and the soon as I got here the Mawddch came down in high and dirty flood. It was too high to fish above so I walked down and met Robinson, who had Davies with him, and off we went to get a Gethigemlyn, and here I began picking up some nice sewin. I ought to mention that Davies killed a nice fish of about 2 1/2 pounds with worm in Tyn-y-groes pool, and lost another. Fred Robinson did not manage the worm well, and I caught 13 out of the 16 . I did well at Llyn Goch [sic] and the rocks above in the evening, the river gradually rising again. Wet and cold (though I changed my stockings and knickerbockers) we started home about 6, and I was seized with a severe attack of spasms and felt very upset on way home: the result of a chill.

Tuesday, August 1 Llyn Pwll y gelli [sic] 2 rods trout 19 [efallai bod hwn yn perthyn i`r diwrnod cynt]. A good deal of rain fell during the night and I walked over to get the Gethigemlyn [sic] Pool, William Roberts following me with the lunch &c. I began if you Gethigemlyn and hooked a fine fish here.I am sure it was a large one. I caught a sewin about 3/4 here: then I determined to go up as a good many rods were below. I did nothing until I came to the 2nd pool below the Falls, fishing down which the second time, I hope that the salmon with the Mystery: he took me under water at the tail end of the pool a really fine fish - I met Major Bicknell on my way down and he had done nothing. Wednesday, August 2nd Very rainy morning, so after breakfast at 9:30 I went to the Mawddach, walking over to Gelligemlyn. The river was rather low so I began with small flies, and caught one sewin at Gelligemlyn, and two at Llyn Coch, and when I was here the river rose rapidly so I cut up to [the] "Meeting of the Waters" where I had my lunch, and then walked straight up to the Falls to fish down. At the 1st Pool below the Falls I rose a nice fish, but he would not come again. I had only time to fish the best pools down, and that rather hurriedly and I only moveda sewin or two Williams of Tyn-y-groes drove me home, and I wanted to be in pretty good time as Alex M`Miching arrived. I came in at 3, and had my lunch and the M`Micking turned up later, and we neither of us had sport, except I got some Brown trout . The others had gone to Barmouth, and returned at 4, and I had some very good lawn tennis.....

Monday, August 7 M`Micking and I had breakfast at 6:30 and walked over to Talyllyn; which we reached at 9:30. We were thus enabled to have some fishing before everyone else came over. It seemed a good day, but few trout were rising to the natural: however we rose a few. Peter and Nelly rode over; and the others came in the carriage, we had a most enjoyable picnic. Flo Fletcher came in our boat afterwards to fish, and played a trout most skilfully. I caught a very nice Sea trout, the first time I have ever captured in Talyllyn, but there are a good many in the Lake now, as well as salmon – owing no doubt to the late heavy rains. The day seemed favourable, however they would not bite at all and I only managed to get four in the afternoon and a nice trout – all on a live minnow. Tuesday, August 15 A wet morning, and all hopes of going to Llanymawddwy were abandoned, so Gwen Price and I went to the river which of course was in order. It rose suddenly as we commenced fishing, and came down dirty, so we tried below Tyn y Groes with worm, but the sewin biting very badly, and although I hooked several, I only got one small one, as did Tommy. We lunched at the "Meeting of the Waters", and as it cleared I determined to go up to the Falls, while Tommy fished down to Tyn y Groes. I found the river too high, and showers kept it up. I did not rise a fish, but killed a sewin 2 1/2 pounds at Tyddyn y Gladys Pool. Douglas Williams caught a nice little grilse at the "Ford Pool" on worm.

Tuesday, August 24 Had breakfast at 7, and it came over very wet indeed, and a fresh flood came down the river this morning, so worm fishing was the order of the day. I went up first to the "Meeting of the Waters", but only got one sewin there - above - which unfortunately jumped into the water again off the bank. I returned below Tynygroes and from 11 until 3 o`clock when I had to shut up, the sewin took well. I lost a large fish at the tail end of the Heather Pool by the hook [drawing?] from the gut. I killed some nice fish in the "Rocks" but did best at the Heather Bryncemlyn pool. I had to stop at 3 o`clock in order to return home to pack my things, as I started to Scotland by the mail this evening. Mawddach: Sewin 14 (1) 2 1/2 lbs. (1) 2 1/4 lbs. (2) 2 lbs. (1) 1 3/4 lbs &c. Brown trout 5. I do not count the sewin which fell into the river again.

I killed two small sewin in the White Stone Pool, where I began, and these were the only fish I got all day. I went right up to the Falls but did not stir a salmon. Walked home. Wynne, after going into Dolgelley during the morning to attend the Sessions in order to give evidence agst [against] the Poachers he caught in the river last Sunday week, fished the Wnion and caught one Sewin [sea trout] and some trout. It poured with rain early this morning. and blew great guns. I did not go over to the Mawddach I am sorry to say, as I no doubt would have had a good day, but Wynne and I stuck to the Wnion, and did very little good, as the river got too high. Of course we had to fish with worm all day, and went right up to Bont Rhi[d?]elyn. We only got four Sewin, and about 20 brown trout. Wynne caught 3 sewin, and I one, but they were al small. Weather very unsettled, with heavy rain in the afternoon. After eleven o`clock breakfast, I went out with my rod until lunchtime; and tried for Sewin (sea trout) with small flies, but could do nothing, only rising two.... went out again after lunch, when it rained very heavily. I caught one sewin with worm at the top of the Big Pool. The river then came down in flood, and I went to Dolgun where I caught three sewin ...Wynne tried the Fad [?], and joined me at Dolgun, he also had three sewin, and had during the early part of the day very good sport at Pwllgelli ... killing 16 nice trout the pool being very full of water after the rain. We were going a picnicon the coach to Mochras Bay, but the weather looked so unsettled we gave it up, so i started across the hill to the mawddach at 8.30, William Roberts coming over with my lunch, and he met me at Tyddyn-y-gladys, just before I hooked a very heavy fish there ... Heavy rain fell this morning... drove up to Aber Eden intending to fish the Falls , but the river rose rapidly, and I was obliged to begin with worm - which I did at the run below the 1st long pool in the wood, when I caught a good sewin [sea trout]. Percy Gye went up to wait for the water to get in order for fly, and I fished down with worm, but had little sport until I went below the Meeting of the Waters. I killed two fine fish at the tail end of the "Upper Bryn??ly? pool", and at 5 tried a fly at the tail end of "Lower Bryncelyn pool and hooked a large fish. Ended up at Gethigemlyn pool, but found Harry Lee fishing with minnow from the other side. Percy Gye killed a nice Sewin [sea trout] of 2lb 10oz at the tail end of the 1st Long pool in the Wood, the only fish he saw. The river though was too high and discoloured for the Upper Waters. A lovely day. I was out on the river at half past seven and tried for a sewin, but could not get one. After breakfast ... strolled up to Pwlchgelli [details of party] for a picnic. It was very little use fishing as there was hardly any breeze at all. I killed one trout about 1/2 lb, and we had two others smaller. This afternoon I walked up to Bontnewydd and began fishing just above the bridge, and I caught a small sewin immediately. I fished some way up but could catch nothing except catch a few small trout. It came over very gloomy and slight rain fell ... fished homewards. Percy and Mrs Gye did nothing after I left them at Pwlchgelli. Pwlchgelli trout 3. Wnion. Sea trout 1. Brown trout 16.

I went into Dolgelley this morning to attend Petty Sessions and the General annual licensing Meeting. I was home to lunch at 2 o`clock, and afterwards Mrs Gye and I walked up to Pwlchgelli in the hopes of getting some trout, but although there was a breeze, the trout were not rising and we returned home at seven o`clock blank. My 30th Birthday. A little rain had fallen so I went by Coach to the Llanellty Bridge, to see what order the river was in, but the rain had made no perceptible difference. I stayed at the boat house for an hour or so talking to Baileys men, who had netted this morning, and had two very pretty grilse [i year old salmon] of 7lbs and 7 1/2 lbs with sea lice on them, and a brown trout of 2 lbs. I walked home and immediately went out ferreting and with my new ferret did well. killing 14 rabbits and a woodpigeon. The midges were terrible this evening.

Tuesday August 3rd We were all going in the coach to Barmouth, but as rain was threatening, and it looked a good day I determined to go over to Talyllyn: so I started to walk, and got there about 10.30. But it was not encouraging, for the Lake was in a dead calm: although the trout were rising. However, I sent for my clothes intending to stay the night: and hoping the Minor and Coxe might come back with the car. It was not long before a gentle breeze sprang up which increased considerably when a heavy shower came on: and soon after a thunder storm. Despite this the trout rose well to the Brown Spinner which was on the water; and the Partridge and Red and Red Ant. I sent home 15 trout with the car, but did not have much sport after 4 o`clock as it became very dark. I dined at 6 o`clock in the coffee room, Captain [Slaney] and his little boy being there.
